Police chief: chase preceded crashes that injured officer, killed suspect

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) –

Troopers said they responded to two crashes on Beaverdam Church Road in Spartanburg County early Wednesday morning. One involving a police officer.

Per the SC Realtime Traffic Information System it all occurred on Beaverdam Church Road at Law Street shortly before midnight.

Interim Chief Todd Hendrix with the Woodruff Police Department said a police officer and suspect were involved in a chase before the crashes occurred.

Hendrix could not immediately release the circumstances leading to the chase.

The chief of the Enoree Fire Department stated the driver of the vehicle being pursued crashed and died on scene in one incident.

Corporal Bill Rhyne with the SC Highway Patrol said a police officer rolled his cruiser in separate crash.

Hendrix said the officer only suffered minor injuries. He was taken to the hospital, treated and released.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger confirmed his office is investigating the other driver’s death. That driver’s name will be released after the coroner has notified next of kin.

Agents from the SC Law Enforcement Division (SLED) were called in to investigate.
