Lowcountry blood shortage blamed on winter weather

Last week’s winter storm didn’t just impact the water system and the roadways. Area hospitals are seeing a shortage of blood and the American Red Cross is asking for help.

Inclement weather caused more than 625 donations to go uncollected, according to the Red Cross. They also report 21 blood drives were canceled because of all the snow and ice.

The winter storm paired with an active cold and flu season, and, on top of that, the holiday season left supply approximately 28,000 donations short. That is approximately a 3.6 percent decrease.

The Red Cross reports any and all donations are being distributed to hospitals as fast as they come in.
