The Perseid Meteor Shower peaks this weekend which will produce the most meteors than any other shower this year.
Now all we need is for the weather to cooperate in order to have the best viewing conditions.
Safe to say, we should get rid of a decent amount of cloud cover by midnight resulting in a partly to mostly clear sky. In general the clearer and darker the sky, the better the viewing conditions.
With a new moon happening at the same time this weekend, the sky will be as dark as it possibly could be, so that will work in our favor. It’s just a matter of how much cloud cover we’ll shake off from daytime thunderstorms. Either way, it’ll still be worth your while to go check it out this weekend on either Saturday or Sunday night.
Stargazers could see up to 70-100 meteors per hour especially in areas where the sky is the clearest, which tonight looks to be the Upstate compared to the mountains (although not by much).
The best place and time to view the meteor shower is away from city lights in a rural area from midnight onward.
Give your eyes about 20 or so minutes to get used to the darkness of the country, and then just sit patiently and enjoy the view!
